HISTORY OF THE “BROKEN MAN”
During the 1960’s the “broken man” was adopted as the logo on the letterhead of Craig Rehabilitation Hospital. It symbolized the rehabilitation process: Helping people with disabilities to resume their life with quality following a spinal cord or brain injury. When Craig was built on the Swedish campus in 1970, the symbol was produced on the cornerstone and can be found on the building just to the left of the front doors of Craig. In 1974, the word “rehabilitation” was dropped as a part of the name of the hospital because of changes in the insurance industry’s reimbursement procedures. A new letterhead design was also adopted. Many staff and patients had come to appreciate the symbolism attached.
